March 14, 1989 : Vaughn Stewart, noted caricature artist, originated the idea of a sports hall of fame for the Madison County area.
Initial talks with Frank Campbell (local golf legend) led to contacting James Record (famous local politician) because of his vast knowledge of the local history and
personal contacts within Madison County. He graciously accepted the idea and position as Chairman and the Hall of Fame was born. One by one, the original board was formed -
all enthusiastically
accepted their roles. The original Board consisted of these members:
- James Record : Chairman
- Vaughn Stewart : Co-Chairman
- Billy Joe Rowan
- Frank Campbell
- Buck Hughes
- Brick Warden
- Robert McKee
- Tooney Summers
- Roy Blair
An initial selection committee of eighteen
met, evaluated, and voted on inductees.
An advisory committee of
civic, religious, political, sports, and educational leaders also provided input.
