Marlon Gurley

Class of 2022

Marlon Gurley’s basketball journey is a story of talent, determination, and an enduring passion for the game. Known for his scoring prowess, Gurley left an indelible mark at every level he played, from high school to college, and now as a mentor for young athletes.

Growing up in rural Madison County, Alabama, Gurley’s love for basketball blossomed early. The son of Joe Kelly and Beatrice Gurley, he honed his skills at gyms and recreation centers across the area, participating in what many consider a golden age of Huntsville prep basketball. By the time he graduated from Madison County High School, Gurley had cemented his reputation as one of the best players in the region. A McDonald’s All-American nominee and a first-team All-County player, Gurley scored over 2,500 points during his high school career, showcasing his natural scoring ability.

After high school, Gurley attended Snead State Community College, where his dominance continued. He was named Player of the Year for the Alabama Community College Conference and earned a spot on the All-Region team. His success attracted attention from multiple college programs, but Gurley chose to stay close to home, joining Jacksonville State University under first-year head coach Mark Turgeon.

At Jacksonville State, Gurley quickly became a cornerstone of the team, earning All-Conference honors and averaging 15 points per game over two seasons. His ability to score in clutch moments was on full display during Senior Night against Mercer when he sank the game-winning shot in his home finale. Reflecting on that moment, Gurley said, “Once the ball got in my hands, I’m letting it go,” a mindset that defined his fearless approach on the court.

Today, Gurley continues to impact the game, working as a student aide at Madison County High School and serving as an assistant girls basketball coach. He also founded the Madison County Storm, a travel basketball program designed to prepare boys and girls for middle and high school competition.

“I try to prepare them for middle school ball and high school,” Gurley explained. “We spend a lot of time teaching kids things, and I feel like that needs to be taught early.”

With his dedication to youth development, Gurley ensures that his legacy extends beyond his playing days, inspiring future generations of athletes in Madison County.
