Kenyon Hambrick

Class of 2023

Kenyon Hambrick is celebrated as one of J.O. Johnson High School’s finest athletes. Excelling in both football and basketball from 1994 to 1997, he earned All-Star recognition as a wide receiver and All-State honors on the basketball court. “It was an honor to play alongside greats like Wayne Madkin,” Hambrick recalled. “Our coaches taught us so much, both about sports and life.”

During his high school years, Hambrick competed against top talents such as Marvin Stone, who transferred from Johnson to Grissom and later played college basketball at Kentucky and Louisville. “Marvin was the best I ever played against,” said Hambrick. “It’s heartbreaking he’s no longer with us.” Other local stars he faced included Travis Lightfoot at Huntsville High and Shawn Draper and Tony McGinnis at Butler.

After high school, Hambrick played one standout season at Hines Junior College in Mississippi, earning team MVP honors as a wide receiver. His debut performance included eight receptions for 120 yards and two touchdowns. “I was nervous being away from home for the first time,” he admitted, “but that first game boosted my confidence.”

Hambrick returned to Huntsville to play for Alabama A&M, where his athleticism shined. In 1999, he made headlines with a 95-yard kickoff return touchdown against Troy, leaving only the kicker to beat with a decisive move. Another memorable moment came against Morris Brown University when Hambrick’s game-winning touchdown catch against three defenders led to a celebratory shoulder ride off the field.

After college, Hambrick spent one season with the Tennessee Valley Vipers in the Arena Football League. Reflecting on his career, Hambrick cherishes the lessons learned and the memories made. “Playing at Johnson and beyond taught me about perseverance, teamwork, and community,” he said.
