But football wasn’t his only sport—Childress encouraged Gary to try wrestling, and by his ninth grade year, Gary had won the city championship in his weight division.

 Throughout high school, Gary excelled in both wrestling and football, and his contributions to Grissom’s success were pivotal. In his senior year, Grissom made it to the state playoffs for the first time, with Gary playing a crucial role. In a shocking upset over Sidney Lanier, Wagner blocked three field goals and an extra point by All-State kicker Bucky Berry, leading Grissom to a 7-6 victory.

 Gary's athleticism earned him All-City and All-State honors in football. After high school, he accepted a football scholarship to Wake Forest University but later transferred to Jacksonville State, where he became known for his quickness. Over two seasons, Gary blocked 17 punts, field goals, and extra points, earning honors as a Little All-American and Gulf South All-Conference selection. His achievements were further solidified when he was named one of the 100 best athletes in Jacksonville State’s history.
