Barbara Belyea

Class of 2012

For more than 30 years, Barbara Belyea has been a fixture on the Huntsville sports scene—first as a champion swimmer, then as a teacher and coach who shaped countless young athletes.

Belyea’s competitive career began at age 10 with the Rocket City Aquatic Club and the Rocket City Swim League. At Whitesburg Junior High, she excelled in volleyball, basketball, and swimming under coach Sam Sullins, winning state junior titles in two events. At Grissom High, she played for Sherry Ammons in volleyball and basketball while training under Sullins and Ronnie Stapler in the pool. She became a four-time state swimming champion, establishing herself as one of Alabama’s elite young athletes.

Collegiately, she earned All-American honors at Memphis State before transferring to Alabama to swim for U.S. Olympic coach Don Gambril, achieving All-SEC status in 1976–77. She graduated in 1977 with a degree in education.

Belyea began teaching at Huntsville High in 1978, coaching swimming and softball. Her 1979 boys swim team won the State Swim and Dive Championship. Later, she led Grissom’s girls program to state titles in 2008 and 2010. Along the way, she coached for Mountain Valley Aquatics, Rocket City Aquatics, Huntsville Swim Association, and Decatur Swim Association.

Belyea credits her first full-time swim coach, David Smith, with instilling the discipline and toughness required to compete at the highest level. “He believed in my abilities and taught me about dedication and hard work,” she says. That mentorship has guided her own coaching philosophy for more than four decades.

Today, Belyea continues to teach physical education in Huntsville City Schools, her influence rippling far beyond the pool. Through her athletes, her lessons on perseverance and self-belief endure—just like the championships she’s brought home.
