Ben Berry
Class of 1996
For more than three decades, Ben Berry helped shape young athletes in Huntsville during some of the most formative years of their lives.
Berry began his coaching career in 1949 at West Huntsville High School, where he quickly gained a reputation as a dedicated teacher and mentor. In 1952 he moved to Huntsville Junior High School, where he spent the majority of his career guiding students during their crucial middle school years.
Although junior high athletics often receive less public recognition than varsity programs, Berry understood the importance of building strong fundamentals, discipline, and character at an early stage. His influence helped develop countless athletes who would later excel in high school and college competition.
Throughout his long career, Berry coached numerous players who went on to earn All-State honors in high school and several who continued their careers at the collegiate level. Many athletes he coached would eventually become inductees into the Huntsville-Madison County Athletic Hall of Fame themselves, a testament to the foundation he helped build.
Before beginning his coaching career, Berry was an accomplished athlete himself. He played college football at Tennessee Tech University in Cookeville, where he developed the knowledge and competitive spirit that would later define his coaching career.
Berry’s life was also shaped by his service to his country. During World War II, he served in the United States military and saw combat in campaigns in North Africa and Italy, experiences that reinforced the values of discipline, teamwork, and perseverance that he later instilled in his athletes.
After 35 years in coaching, Berry retired in 1984, leaving behind a legacy built not on headlines but on the countless young people he influenced along the way.
For generations of Huntsville athletes, Ben Berry was more than a coach—he was a teacher, mentor, and guiding influence.
