Bobby Buford

Robert G. “Bobby” Buford grew up in Huntsville and became one of Madison County’s most accomplished multi-sport athletes before building a career in education and school leadership.
A standout at New Hope High School, Buford excelled in both basketball and baseball. On the basketball court, he was one of the most productive scorers in the region. During the 1972 season, Buford averaged 20.5 points and 10 rebounds per game, helping lead New Hope to a 22-4 record.
His outstanding performance earned him numerous honors. Buford was named to the Madison County All-Tournament Team and the Guntersville Christmas Tournament All-Tournament Team, and he received All-County recognition from both The Huntsville News and The Huntsville Times. His consistent play also earned him Second Team All-State honors during the early 1970s.
Buford was equally talented on the baseball field. As a pitcher for the New Hope Indians, he earned a place on the West team in the 1972 East-West All-Star Game, highlighting his reputation as one of the area’s top high school players.
After graduating from New Hope, Buford continued his education and athletic career. He attended Snead State Junior College on a basketball scholarship before later signing a baseball scholarship with David Lipscomb College in Nashville.
His pitching ability attracted professional attention, and Buford was eventually signed by the Atlanta Braves organization, where he pitched in the minor leagues until 1977. After his professional baseball career, he returned to the court and played basketball at Athens State University.
Buford later devoted his career to education in North Alabama. He served as a teacher and coach at DAR High School before moving into school administration. Over the years he held several leadership roles, including serving as principal at Douglas High School and later as elementary principal at DAR School in Grant.
