Kenneth Darby

Class of 2024

Born in Huntsville the day after Christmas in 1982, Kenneth Darby emerged as a football sensation at Butler High School. A dynamic two-way player, Darby rushed for 4,674 yards and 20 touchdowns as a senior while amassing 2,364 all-purpose yards. On defense, he was just as formidable, racking up 77 tackles in his final season and 281 across his high school career.

It was no surprise when Darby committed to the University of Alabama, the only college he visited. “I always knew I was going to Alabama,” he said. “Looking back, I missed out on other visits, but it wouldn’t have changed my decision.”

Darby redshirted his freshman year in 2002 before joining the varsity team under Coach Mike Shula in 2003. His breakout season came in 2004, rushing for over 1,000 yards and solidifying his role as Alabama’s go-to running back. In 2005, he earned first-team All-SEC honors, amassing 1,242 rushing yards and leading the Crimson Tide to a 10-2 record. One of his standout performances came in Alabama’s dominant 31-3 victory over Florida, where he rushed for 101 yards against Urban Meyer’s vaunted defense. However, the season’s trajectory shifted when star receiver Tyrone Prothro suffered a devastating injury. “I believe we could’ve won the national championship if Prothro hadn’t been injured,” Darby reflected.

Injuries also took their toll on Darby during his senior year, limiting his production to 800 rushing yards and leaving Alabama with a disappointing 6-6 record.

Darby’s journey continued in the NFL. Selected in the seventh round of the 2008 draft by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, he later joined the Atlanta Falcons and eventually found his stride with the St. Louis Rams. Over four seasons, he contributed 140 rushing yards and 19 receptions for 183 yards and a touchdown.

After retiring from football, Darby transitioned to real estate investment in Huntsville, a venture he calls his “bread and butter.” He also serves as a physical coach at Iron Tribe Fitness, sharing his passion for fitness with others.

Darby’s football journey began with early recruitment letters from Nick Saban, first at Michigan State and later at LSU. He jokes that he was recruited twice by the man he considers the greatest college football coach of all time.

Now a husband of 12 years to Nicia and father of three, Darby reflects on his career and life with gratitude. His induction into the Huntsville-Madison County Athletic Hall of Fame Class of 2024 cements his legacy as one of Alabama’s most accomplished athletes.
