Dan Bell
Class of 2018
Dan Bell’s basketball journey began in 1969 as a freshman at the newly opened Virgil I. Grissom High School. A driven and gifted athlete, Bell would go on to become the school’s first big-time basketball player, a pioneer whose passion and work ethic set the tone for the program’s future success. Nearly five decades later, that journey came full circle with his 2018 induction into the Huntsville-Madison County Athletic Hall of Fame.
Guided by early mentors George Newby and Ronnie Stapler, Bell helped lead Grissom to three consecutive city championships while compiling records of 19-8, 20-7, and 19-7. By his senior year, he was All-City, All-State, MVP of the city tournament, and Huntsville’s Most Valuable Athlete. But the accolades only tell part of the story. As Bell recalled, “Basketball became the way to create a niche for myself. It became a love, a passion, and an obsession.”
That passion intensified after a formative encounter with Alabama head coach C.M. Newton, who showed Bell footage of a high schooler named Pete Maravich doing dazzling drills. Inspired, Bell returned home and created his own intense training regimen—sometimes working out five to seven hours a day.
Bell starred at Walker Junior College and then Northwestern State in Louisiana, where he led the team in assists and scoring. His post-college career included a three-year stint with Athletes in Action, competing across the U.S., Canada, and Europe.
In coaching, Bell found new purpose. After assistant roles at Nicholls State, Marshall, and East Carolina, he returned to Northwestern State as head coach in 1988. In his second season, his Demons stunned the college basketball world with an upset win over Kentucky at Rupp Arena. Later, he returned to Alabama, winning 160 games over a decade at Bob Jones High School, followed by coaching stints at Hazel Green, Belgreen, Ider, and Oneonta. He continues to share his love for the game as a teacher and coach at Whitesburg Middle School.
From a self-motivated teen in a new school gym to an internationally traveled player and respected coach, Dan Bell’s story is one of tireless effort, spiritual grounding, and a lifelong bond with basketball.
