Editha Dotson-Bowser
Class of 2006
Editha Dotson-Bowser’s remarkable skating career carried her from a childhood fascination with the sport in Huntsville to international competition and professional performances around the world.
Her journey began at Huntsville’s old Ice Palace when she attended a skating show as a young girl. Inspired by what she saw, she began skating at the age of seven and quickly developed a passion for the sport. “I was very quickly serious,” she later recalled. “It didn’t take me long to know that this is what I wanted to do.”
Dotson-Bowser attended Johnson High School, graduating in 1977 while pursuing an increasingly competitive skating career. As an amateur skater she achieved significant success, earning ten national or international medals during her competitive years.
In 1981, after 15 years of amateur competition, she turned professional. Her career reached a major milestone in 1983 when she captured the Ladies World Professional Championship in Jaca, Spain.
Dotson-Bowser performed internationally with several Olympic champions, including John Curry, Robin Cousins and Dorothy Hamill. She appeared in prestigious venues such as the Metropolitan Opera House in New York, the Wang Center in Boston, the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C., and McCormick Place in Chicago.
In 1985 she returned to Huntsville to complete her education and help build the local skating community. After earning a bachelor’s degree with honors from the University of Alabama in Huntsville, she devoted her career to coaching.
Dotson-Bowser also performed with Dorothy Hamill in the HBO production Nutcracker on Ice, which won an Emmy Award in 1990.
When the Huntsville Ice Complex opened in 1991, she was named head professional and later became Director of Skating in 1994. Under her guidance, her students have won 23 national and international medals.
