Frederiek Toney

Class of 2014

Frederiek Toney’s journey from a determined high school athlete in Madison County to one of the nation’s most respected automotive executives demonstrates the lasting value of discipline, education and perseverance.

Toney first distinguished himself as a basketball player at Lee High School in Huntsville. A senior captain in 1973, he earned first-team All-City and All-Region honors while helping lead the Generals on the court.

Despite his strong performance, Toney faced a common challenge for many talented players of the era: limited recruiting attention due in part to his height. However, his outstanding academic record created new opportunities.

At Lee High School he received the Student-Athlete Academic Award for maintaining the highest grade-point average among athletes. That accomplishment opened the door for him to attend the University of Alabama in Huntsville.

At UAH, Toney joined the university’s newly elevated varsity basketball program. During his time with the Chargers, the team achieved an important milestone by advancing to the NAIA national tournament, an accomplishment that helped establish the program’s early reputation.

While basketball remained an important part of his college experience, Toney focused heavily on academic success and professional development. After earning his undergraduate degree from UAH, he later completed a Master of Business Administration at the University of La Verne.

Toney built an extraordinary business career that paralleled the determination he had shown in athletics. He spent 16 years with Caterpillar and later served seven years with American Honda, where he rose to the position of Assistant Vice President of Parts.

In 2000 he joined Ford Motor Company, where his leadership skills and strategic vision helped propel him to senior executive roles. Eventually he became Vice President and President of Global Ford Customer Service.

His influence in the corporate world earned him national recognition as one of the 100 Most Powerful Executives in Corporate America.

Toney credits his brother James as a lifelong mentor who helped shape both his athletic and professional journeys. He remains active in education and leadership initiatives and serves on advisory councils for both UAH and Central State University.
