Jerry Dugan

Class of 1989

Jerry Dugan, a beloved figure in Huntsville sports, is remembered for his remarkable contributions to Alabama high school basketball. Inducted into the Huntsville-Madison County Athletic Hall of Fame in 1989, Dugan’s career as a coach spanned nearly four decades and was marked by historic achievements that left an indelible impact on the community.

Born on July 23, 1938, in Huntsville, Alabama, Dugan’s love for sports began early. He attended Lincoln Elementary and Middle School and went on to become a standout athlete at Butler High School, lettering in football, basketball, and baseball alongside future stars like Don Mincher and Glen Nunley. His athletic talent earned him a baseball scholarship to David Lipscomb College, where he played before continuing his education with a Master’s degree from Middle Tennessee State University.

Dugan’s coaching career began at Madison Middle School before he made a name for himself at Hazel Green and Lee High Schools. He made history by becoming the only coach in Alabama High School Athletic Association history to win consecutive state championships in different classifications, securing titles at Hazel Green in 1967 and Lee in 1968. His coaching tenure included stints in baseball, football, and basketball, but it was basketball where he truly excelled. Over his 38-year career, Dugan won 619 games, including two state championships, and earned a reputation for developing exceptional players.

Dugan’s coaching philosophy was centered on discipline, hard work, and building strong relationships with his players. He was also a devoted member of the Huntsville community, actively participating in the Quarterback Club, the Huntsville-Madison County Athletic Hall of Fame, and the Alabama High School Sports Hall of Fame.

Jerry Dugan passed away in 2020, leaving behind a legacy of excellence, mentorship, and dedication to the sport. He is survived by his wife Sharon, son Gregory, and grandson Taylor, and his contributions to the game continue to inspire future generations of athletes and coaches.
