Jim Oaks

Class of 2001

Jim Oaks built a distinguished career as both an athlete and coach, leaving a lasting impact on generations of Huntsville students. A native of Tishomingo, Mississippi, Oaks first demonstrated his leadership and athletic ability while attending Iuka High School.

At Iuka, he excelled both academically and athletically. Oaks served as captain of the football team, playing both end and quarterback. His academic talents were also evident at an early age when he won the Mississippi State 4-H public speaking championship.

Oaks attended Millsaps College for one year before receiving an appointment to the United States Military Academy at West Point in 1957. Following his graduation from West Point, he began a distinguished military career. Oaks served in both Korea and Vietnam before resigning his Army commission with the rank of captain in 1969.

After completing his military service, Oaks began a long and influential career as a teacher and coach at Huntsville High School. Over more than 25 years, he helped build one of the most successful track, cross country and tennis programs in the state.

Among the many highlights of his coaching career was the 1977 Alabama state championship won by Huntsville High’s girls tennis team. His cross-country teams also achieved remarkable success, capturing boys state championships in 1983, 1984 and 1985 and girls state championships in 1987 and 1989.

Beyond wins and championships, Oaks’ greatest legacy lies in the thousands of students he mentored during his career. Known for his leadership, discipline and dedication, he helped shape the lives of young people both on and off the athletic field.

Through decades of service as an educator, coach and role model, Jim Oaks became one of the most respected figures in Huntsville athletics.
