John Buford

Class of 1999

John “Johnny” Buford followed a path of athletic excellence that began in Huntsville and continued through college basketball, earning recognition as one of Madison County’s top players of his era.

Buford attended Owens Cross Roads Junior High before moving on to New Hope High School, where he quickly established himself as one of the program’s leading players. His performances on the court earned him numerous honors and helped build the strong basketball tradition that New Hope would become known for in the Tennessee Valley.

During the 1969 season, Buford was named to the Madison County All-Tournament Team and earned All-County honors from both The Huntsville News and The Huntsville Times. He was also selected to the Region 8 All-District Team and was named to The Huntsville Times 1969 Dream Team, recognizing the area’s most outstanding players.

Buford’s strong play also brought statewide recognition when he received Honorable Mention All-State honors in 1969.

Following his successful high school career, Buford continued playing basketball at David Lipscomb University in Nashville. Over the course of his collegiate career, he played all four seasons for the Bisons and developed into a respected leader on the team.

As a senior, Buford was selected as team captain, reflecting the leadership qualities that had become one of his trademarks both on and off the court.

Buford often credits the people who helped guide his development as both an athlete and a person. Among the most influential were his grandfather Roy Craig, his parents Bill and Doris Buford, and his high school coach Gilmer Ellis.

He also acknowledges the influence of his brother Bobby Buford, another Huntsville-Madison County Athletic Hall of Fame inductee whose own accomplishments helped inspire him.

Together, the Buford brothers represent one of the notable athletic families in Madison County history, each contributing to the proud sports tradition of New Hope and the Huntsville area.
