Dr. John Walters

Class of 2010

From Huntsville High’s golden run under Tom Owen to a decades-long career of coaching, service, and care, Dr. John Walters has lived sport as both calling and compass. Born July 27, 1953, in Savannah, Ga., he moved to Huntsville in 1957 and became a three-year HHS letterman (1968–70). A two-way standout at quarterback and safety, he played a pivotal role on the Panthers’ undefeated 1969 team and was named team MVP in 1970.

Walters continued at Sewanee under legendary coach Shirley Majors, first as a single-wing tailback and later as a safety—an experience that reinforced perspective: academics first, football second, and play for the love of the game. He returned home to coach at Lee High (1976–80), assisting in football and basketball while also leading freshman baseball and girls’ softball, absorbing mentorship from John Childress, Glen Nunley, and Jerry Dugan.

In 1980, Walters changed paths, enrolling in the UAB School of Optometry. Four years later he opened a practice in Madison, but he never left the sideline ethos behind. He coached youth baseball, basketball, and football in local leagues and, true to a lifelong passion for the game, played three years in Huntsville’s 40-and-over baseball league.

Walters has invested in Huntsville schools as generously as he invested in his patients—supporting programs at Bob Jones, Discovery, and Liberty—and served on the Madison City Schools Board of Education (1998–2001). He credits “four families” for shaping him: the HHS staff under Owen for meticulous preparation; Majors for toughness and balance; the Lee coaching community for mentorship; and, above all, his parents, Joe and Claire, and a house full of talented siblings who modeled fair play, hard work, and support.

John and his wife, Janice, raised two children, Andrew and Mary Hannah. Quarterback, safety, coach, doctor—Walters’s titles changed, but the throughline never did: serve well, prepare fully, and lift the people around you.
