Born on March 28, 1917, in Bessemer, Alabama, Crews’ journey began at Dunbar High School and continued at Alabama A&M, where he was an outstanding running back in the late 1930s. Notably, he scored the first-ever touchdown in the historic Magic City Classic, the storied rivalry between Alabama A&M and Alabama State. Crews returned to his alma mater as head football coach in 1960, inheriting a program that lacked athletic scholarships.
