Max Kelley

Class of 2001

Max Kelly built a reputation as one of North Alabama’s most accomplished multi-sport athletes before achieving collegiate success at the University of Alabama.

Kelly attended both Athens and Cullman High Schools, where he starred in football, basketball and baseball. Influential coaches such as Grady Elmore, Ferman Elmore and John Meadows played important roles in shaping his athletic development.

Although he excelled in several sports, Kelly made his greatest impact on the football field. Playing guard and fullback, he earned All-County and All-Tennessee Valley Conference honors during his sophomore and junior seasons. As a senior he served as team co-captain and delivered one of the most memorable performances of his career by scoring five touchdowns in a single game against Hartselle.

Kelly’s outstanding senior season earned him All-State honors and a selection to the Alabama high school football all-star game in Tuscaloosa.

He continued his career at Alabama, where he became a three-year starter for the Crimson Tide—two seasons at guard and one at fullback. In 1956 he was selected as the team’s Most Valuable Player.

Kelly’s legacy at Alabama is permanently honored with his hand and footprints enshrined in the Denny Chimes Walk of Fame.

In addition to football, Kelly also contributed to Alabama’s baseball program as a catcher.

After his playing days ended, Kelly remained active in athletics and earned a reputation as one of Alabama’s finest basketball officials,
