Class of 1996
Melvin Allen’s basketball career began in Madison County and developed into one of the most accomplished playing careers in Jacksonville State University history.
Allen first gained recognition at Sparkman High School, where he emerged as a dynamic guard and natural leader. During his senior season, Sparkman produced one of the most memorable campaigns in school history, winning 31 consecutive games before suffering a narrow defeat in the state championship game.
That remarkable season helped Allen earn the opportunity to continue his basketball career at Jacksonville State University, where he became a cornerstone of one of the most successful teams in the program’s history.
Serving as the starting point guard, Allen helped guide the Gamecocks to the 1984–85 NCAA Division II national championship. Jacksonville State finished the season with an extraordinary 31-1 record and established itself as one of the nation’s premier small-college basketball programs.
Allen’s leadership and steady play at point guard were essential to the championship run. Known for his composure and accuracy at the free-throw line, he set Gulf South Conference season records for free throws made (196) and attempted (248), surpassing the marks he had established the year before.
His dominance at the free-throw line continued throughout his career. Allen still holds Gulf South Conference career records with 463 free throws made and 595 attempted.
During the championship season, Allen also set a Jacksonville State school record with 237 assists. By the end of his career he had accumulated 645 assists, ranking among the program’s all-time leaders.
Allen earned numerous honors during his collegiate career. He was selected All-Gulf South Conference three times and was named Most Valuable Player of the 1985 Gulf South Conference Tournament and the NCAA South Regional.
His performance during the national tournament earned him a place on the NCAA Final Four All-Tournament Team. Allen was also honored as the Small College Athlete of the Year.
When his career concluded, Allen left Jacksonville State as one of the most decorated players in school history, remembered for his leadership, consistency and clutch performance in critical moments.
