Randy Bunn

Class of 2019

For more than two decades, Randy Bunn’s influence could be measured not only in seconds on a stopwatch but in the growth of generations of young athletes across North Alabama. As head boys’ track coach at Grissom High School from 1988 to 2003, Bunn built a program defined by discipline, preparation and consistent success.

Under his leadership, Grissom’s track teams became perennial contenders in Huntsville City Schools and throughout the state. Bunn’s athletes regularly excelled in both individual and relay events, reflecting a program that emphasized both personal improvement and team achievement. His ability to motivate athletes and develop talent earned him Huntsville City Schools Track Coach of the Year honors an extraordinary 16 times.

Bunn’s excellence extended well beyond the local level. In 2001 he was named Alabama State Track and Field Coach of the Year, recognition that reflected not only the success of his teams but also the respect he earned from fellow coaches throughout the state.

After leaving Grissom, Bunn continued shaping athletic programs and mentoring students across Alabama. From 2003 to 2005 he served as athletic director and head track coach at Paul W. Bryant High School in Tuscaloosa. He later taught at Riverchase High School and coached track at Pelham High School, continuing to share his experience and passion for the sport until 2009.

A 1977 graduate of Jess Lanier High School, Bunn went on to attend the University of Alabama and later earned his master’s degree from Alabama A&M University. His career reflects a lifelong commitment to education, athletics and student development.

Now retired and living in Panama City Beach, Florida, Bunn leaves behind a lasting legacy across Alabama track and field — one measured in championships, honors and, most importantly, the athletes whose lives he helped shape.
