Randy Davidson
Class of 1997
Randy Davidson’s baseball journey carried him from the diamonds of Huntsville to international competition, the College World Series, and professional baseball. Along the way he established himself as one of the finest players ever to come out of Lee High School.
Davidson and his brother Ricky were widely regarded as two of the top athletes in Lee High School history. Randy’s greatest impact came on the baseball field, where he helped lead the Generals to the Alabama Class 4A state championship. His outstanding performance during that championship season earned him recognition as the team’s Most Valuable Player.
His success quickly attracted the attention of professional scouts, and Davidson was drafted by the Chicago Cubs. Instead of signing immediately, however, he chose to continue his education and baseball development at Columbia State Community College in Tennessee.
At Columbia State, Davidson became one of the nation’s top junior college players. A smooth-fielding second baseman with excellent instincts, he helped lead Columbia State to the Junior College World Series in 1972. The following year he earned JUCO All-America honors and participated in one of the most remarkable events of his baseball career.
In 1973 Davidson joined a group of American college players competing in the World Baseball Federation Tournament in Central America. Against strong international competition, the Americans won 11 consecutive games to capture the gold medal. The victory remains the only time the United States has won the tournament.
Following his junior college success, Davidson transferred to Florida State University, where he played for the Seminoles in 1974 and 1975. As a senior he helped lead Florida State to the College World Series and earned All-America recognition.
Davidson then signed with the Cincinnati Reds organization and spent five seasons in professional baseball, advancing as high as Triple-A Indianapolis. He later managed in the Northwest and Midwest leagues before returning to Huntsville, where he built a successful career in business.
