Ronnie Vaughn
Class of 2011
Ronnie Vaughn’s journey from Grissom High School standout to professional baseball player and respected coach reflects a lifelong dedication to the game.
Born January 10, 1961, Vaughn grew up in Huntsville and attended Grissom High School, where he distinguished himself as a three-sport athlete in football, basketball and baseball. While he excelled in several sports, baseball soon became his greatest passion.
As a catcher for the Tigers, Vaughn developed a reputation for leadership, defensive skill and clutch hitting. His performance during the 1979 season earned him All-City recognition and helped establish him as one of the area’s top prospects.
Following graduation, Vaughn continued his baseball career at Roane State Community College, where he further developed his skills before transferring to Middle Tennessee State University.
At MTSU he became one of the Ohio Valley Conference’s top catchers. Vaughn earned All-OVC honors and played a key role in leading the Blue Raiders to a conference championship. During that era MTSU also came close to reaching the College World Series, highlighting the program’s national competitiveness.
Vaughn’s success at the collegiate level led to an opportunity in professional baseball when he was drafted by the Detroit Tigers organization. He spent time in the minor leagues developing his game before eventually transitioning into coaching.
Returning to Middle Tennessee State, Vaughn served as an assistant coach and recruiting coordinator. During his nine years on the coaching staff the Blue Raiders enjoyed one of the most successful periods in program history, capturing six conference championships and advancing to five NCAA Regional tournaments.
Later Vaughn returned to Huntsville, where he remained deeply involved in youth baseball. As a coach and mentor he helped guide countless young players, sharing both his knowledge of the game and the lessons he had learned throughout his career.
Family has always been central to Vaughn’s life. His daughter Jayce became an outstanding golfer at Grissom High School and later competed for the University of Alabama in Huntsville. His late son Hogan was also a talented junior golfer.
Vaughn later built a career in retail management and now lives in Decatur with his wife Candi and their family.
