Selby Andrews

Class of 2009

Born in Burlington, North Carolina, and raised in Huntsville from the age of four, Selby Andrews became one of the city’s most decorated track athletes. He began his career at Whitesburg Middle School under coach Ken Byrd, later excelling at Grissom High School under Adam Williamson. Andrews was a multi-event standout, competing in the high jump, long jump, triple jump, sprints, and relays. He became the first Grissom athlete to compete in the Alabama State Decathlon, scoring 6,035 points and placing in the state’s top ten.

His dominance in the high jump made him a four-year force in North Alabama, culminating in a High School All-American honor in 1977. At Troy University, Andrews flourished, winning eight Gulf South Conference titles and earning All-American recognition in 1981. He was the conference high jump champion all four years, set the Troy record at 7’1 1/8”, and added multiple triple jump and long jump titles. His 7’0” leap at the Florida Relays as a freshman still stands as a meet record for his division.

Andrews credits God, his parents Jere and Gail Andrews, and a network of dedicated coaches for his success. His father, in particular, invested countless hours coaching technique, filming practices, and traveling to meets. After college, Selby remained a respected figure in the athletic community and settled in Rogersville, Alabama, with his wife, Kellie, and their children.

A champion in multiple disciplines, Andrews remains one of Huntsville’s most versatile and accomplished track stars.
