Steve Bolt: A Track and Marathon Phenomenon

Steve Bolt is one of Huntsville’s most accomplished track athletes. As a student at Grissom High School, he set indoor and outdoor mile records that still stand today. In 1973, Track and Field News named him the Best High School Miler in the country.

Bolt accepted a track scholarship to the University of Alabama, where he dominated the competition. He won eight SEC titles in track and cross-country and was named All-American three times. In 1977, he became the first runner in SEC history to break the four-minute mile. He still holds the SEC indoor mile and two-mile records.

After college, Bolt became a successful road racer, winning numerous marathons, including the first two Huntsville Rocket City Marathons in 1977 and 1978. He also won England’s International Daffodil Marathon in 1982 and 1984. Remarkably, he is one of the few athletes in the world to have run both a sub-four-minute mile and a sub-2:15 marathon.
