About Inductee

Biography

Selby Andrews was born in Burlington, North Carolina, and moved to Huntsville, Alabama, at age four. He attended Whitesburg Middle School where he began his track career under the coaching of Ken Byrd. Later, at Grissom High School, he expanded his track event participation under the direction of Adam Williamson. He also participated in freshman basketball and baseball before devoting full time to track. At Grissom, he was an excellent high jumper, long jumper and triple jumper, but also added the 100 yard dash and the 4 X 400 relay. His best event was the high jump in which he was a dominant participant in Huntsville and North Alabama for four years. He was also the first Grissom athlete to participate in the Alabama State Decathlon, scoring 6035 points, which placed him in the states top ten. For his outstanding achievements in track, he was named to the 1977 High School All-American Team. Following graduation, Selby signed a track scholarship with Troy University where he competed under Coaches John Doc Anderson, Rick Stetson and Charles Oliver. Andrews was Gulf South Conference Champion eight times and was named to the 1981 All-American College Track and Field Team. He was also the Gulf South Conference High Jump Champion for his four collegiate years. In his Junior year he attained the 70 mark in high jumping. He was the champion in the triple jump for three years and in the long jump for one year, and he holds the Troy State University record in the high jump at 7 1/8. While at Troy, he added the Florida Relays College Freshman Record in the high jump at 70 to supplement his Florida Relays High School Record of 69. Selby first thanks God for giving him the talent and ability for the things he has accomplished. Next he thanks his parents, Jere and Gail Andrews, for fully supporting everything that he was involved in. My Dad spent many hours filming, coaching the techniques of high jumping and taking me to all the various sporting events. In addition, he thanks John Doc Anderson, his first University coach, who taught me the importance of setting goals. Finally he thanks all his coaches, from recreational leagues through college, for their time and dedication to coaching and teaching him the fundamentals of sports and life. Selby and his wife, Kellie, and their two children now live in Rogersville, Alabama.
