Tommy never enjoyed the luxury of the bench in his entire brilliant career He was All-State at the Greenville High School A three-year starting fullback at the University of Alabama Played in the Orange Bowl in January 1953, where he was the leading ground gainer. He was the souths leading man on the ground in the 1954 Senior Bowl He was alternate captain on the Alabama team in the 1954 Cotton Bowl He was honorable mention All-American. He was the leading rusher and scorer on 1957 Ottawa Rough-Riders in the Canadian football league and never did relish the bench, which prompted him to tackle Dicky Moegle in the first place.
