Avery Lee “Abe” Daniel
Class of 1997
For many youngsters growing up in West Huntsville during the middle of the twentieth century, Abe Daniel represented the very best of community athletics. A gifted ballplayer and dedicated coach, Daniel spent decades helping young athletes learn the values of teamwork, discipline, and perseverance.
Born in Madison County in 1928, Daniel grew up in a large family and left school early to help support his brothers and sisters. Despite those responsibilities, he developed into one of Huntsville’s most respected semipro baseball players. A talented pitcher who could play virtually any position on the field, Daniel competed in the area’s mill leagues throughout the 1940s, 1950s, and 1960s.
Over a 22-year semipro career he played for several well-known Huntsville teams, including the Parkers, Merchants, and Braves. His skill on the mound earned him selection to the all-district team in a tournament held in Huntsville in 1960. Even late in his career Daniel continued to excel. In his final game at the age of 38, he pitched a complete nine-inning shutout to defeat Guntersville 3–0. He later managed a semipro team that captured a district championship.
While his accomplishments as a player were impressive, Daniel’s greatest legacy came through youth sports. For more than ten years he coached football, basketball, and baseball at the McCormick YMCA. His youth football teams were remarkably successful, compiling a record of 85 wins, seven losses, and three ties over ten seasons while winning numerous championships.
His basketball teams were also highly competitive, advancing to the state tournament four times and earning several trophies along the way. Daniel was frequently recognized as Outstanding Coach and Coach of the Year.
In 1991 the city honored his contributions by naming one of the playing fields at Archer Park “Abe Daniel Field.” For generations of young athletes in West Huntsville, Abe Daniel was not just a coach — he was a mentor and a lasting sports legend.
