David “Hoss” Johnson
Class of 1997
David “Hoss” Johnson grew up in Huntsville and became one of the most respected offensive linemen to come out of Butler High School. Known for his size, toughness and leadership, Johnson played a key role in the Rebels’ success during the 1980 and 1981 seasons. His strong play along the line earned him All-State honors and attracted the attention of major college programs throughout the Southeast.
Johnson signed a football scholarship with the University of Alabama in 1982. His signing carried special historical significance: he holds the distinction of being the final player recruited and signed by legendary Crimson Tide coach Paul “Bear” Bryant before Bryant’s retirement. For Johnson, the opportunity to join one of college football’s most storied programs was both an honor and a challenge.
During his career at Alabama, Johnson developed into a dependable starter along the offensive line. From 1984 through 1986 he started 28 games for the Crimson Tide, helping anchor an offense that consistently competed at the highest level of Southeastern Conference football. Alabama earned postseason invitations during his career, including appearances in the Sun Bowl and the Aloha Bowl.
Following his college career, Johnson signed as a free agent with the St. Louis Cardinals in 1987. Although his professional career was brief, his accomplishments on the field were recognized when he was later named to the Birmingham Post-Herald’s All-Alabama Team of the 1980s.
Johnson has remained deeply involved in the Huntsville community. He has worked with the City of Huntsville Parks and Recreation Department while also devoting significant time to youth development and mentorship. He founded SECRS Inc., a nonprofit organization dedicated to helping student-athletes pursue scholarship opportunities and further their education.
In addition to his professional and charitable work, Johnson has served on the board of the Huntsville-Madison County Athletic Hall of Fame and supported organizations such as the Fellowship of Christian Athletes and the Metro Kiwanis Club of Huntsville.
Through athletics, mentorship and service, David “Hoss” Johnson has left a lasting impact on the Huntsville sports community.
