Dr. Anthony Toney

Class of 2014

Growing up in a large, sports-loving family in Huntsville, Anthony Toney developed the competitive spirit and discipline that would guide him to success both on the field and in his professional life.

One of nine children born to Ambrose and Laura Toney, Anthony was part of a household where athletics played an important role. Along with two of his brothers, he starred at Butler High School after first playing football at Stone Middle School. A versatile athlete, Toney became a four-sport letterman for the Rebels and earned All-City honors twice as a defensive back in 1974 and 1975.

He continued his football career at Alabama A&M University, where he emerged as one of the Bulldogs’ standout defensive players during a period of transition for the program. A ball-hawking safety known for his instincts and leadership, Toney was named Alabama A&M’s Defensive Player of the Year in both 1976 and 1977. He also earned Defensive MVP honors in the Magic City Classic in both 1978 and 1979 and served as team captain during his junior and senior seasons.

Athletic excellence ran throughout the Toney family. His brother Clifford later played defensive back at Auburn, recording 11 interceptions from 1978-80, while younger brother Jeff also played football at Alabama A&M.

After earning a biology degree at Alabama A&M, Toney pursued dentistry and graduated from the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey. He initially practiced in Gadsden before returning to Huntsville in 1985 to establish his own practice, Inspiring Smiles Family Dentistry.

Toney credits legendary Butler coach John Meadows for having the greatest influence on his athletic career. From Meadows he learned lessons that extended far beyond sports—integrity, perseverance, humility and loyalty.

In addition to his professional and athletic achievements, Dr. Toney has remained deeply involved in his community through church leadership and charitable organizations.

His life reflects the same values that defined his playing days: discipline, service and leadership.
