James Wilson
Class of 2014
For James Wilson, football has been a lifelong passion—first as a player and later as one of the most respected officials in the sport.
A 1967 graduate of Butler High School, Wilson was among the early pioneers during the integration era of Huntsville’s public schools. At Butler he earned letters in both football and track before continuing his athletic career at Eastern Kentucky University. There he became a four-year letterman at tight end, earning team MVP honors and All-Ohio Valley Conference recognition during his senior season.
Following college, Wilson began a 34-year career with Ford Motor Company, working in Louisville, Dallas and Memphis. But his involvement with football continued to grow in another role—officiating.
Wilson first became interested in officiating after attending a high school all-star game in Louisville, where he found himself studying the officials more closely than the players. Confident he could perform the job, he began officiating in 1964 and steadily worked his way up through the ranks.
His dedication eventually led to assignments at the highest levels of the sport. Wilson spent 13 years as an on-field official in the Southeastern Conference from 1985-97 before moving to the National Football League, where he officiated from 1998-2003.
Among the many memorable moments in his officiating career was the dramatic 1993 Alabama-Tennessee game at Legion Field. Serving as the head linesman, Wilson was positioned at the goal line when Alabama’s David Palmer scored the two-point conversion that tied the game in the final seconds.
After retiring from on-field officiating in 2004, Wilson continued to contribute to the sport as an NFL Official Observer.
Throughout his life and career, Wilson credits his parents, Theodore and Altha Wilson, for instilling the values of discipline, integrity and hard work that shaped his success.
