David Moon
Class of 2019
David Moon’s football career traces a path from North Alabama high school stardom to major college competition in the Southeastern Conference, followed by success in the business world. Born in Decatur and raised in the Huntsville area, Moon became one of the most highly recruited football players to emerge from Hazel Green High School during the late 1970s and early 1980s.
A dominant lineman on both sides of the ball, Moon’s combination of size, strength and athleticism made him a cornerstone of Hazel Green’s program. At 6-foot-5 and roughly 270 pounds, he was an imposing presence whether blocking for the offense or anchoring the defensive line. His senior season in 1980 brought statewide recognition when he was named first-team All-State at offensive tackle and selected to play in the prestigious Alabama High School Athletic Association All-Star Game.
Moon attracted recruiting attention from many of the nation’s top programs, including Alabama and Auburn. Ultimately he chose to play for coach Johnny Majors at the University of Tennessee, joining a Volunteers program that was building toward renewed prominence in the Southeastern Conference.
Moon made an immediate impression in Knoxville and enjoyed an especially strong sophomore season before injuries interrupted his career. Two ACL surgeries slowed his progress, yet he remained a valuable member of the Tennessee program and demonstrated resilience by continuing to compete at the highest level of college football. During his time with the Volunteers, Moon played in four bowl games and was respected by coaches and teammates for his toughness and perseverance.
In 1985 Moon received the Herman Hickman Award, presented to Tennessee’s top senior football player who demonstrates outstanding leadership, character and determination. That same year he was honored as the university’s Top Senior Male Student-Athlete.
After football, Moon built another successful career in Knoxville as founder and chairman of Moon Capital Management, establishing one of the region’s premier financial services firms while continuing to represent the leadership and determination that marked his playing days.
