Richard Wilson
Class of 2019
Richard Wilson embodies the spirit of dedication and community service in high school athletics. A Huntsville native and graduate of Lee High School, Wilson returned to his alma mater in 1993 to revive its tennis program. Initially planning a short tenure, his commitment extended over two decades, during which he transformed a fledgling team into a competitive force.
Operating as a volunteer coach, Wilson often started with students who had little to no experience in tennis. He personally provided equipment and instilled in his players a passion for the game. His efforts culminated in over 300 career wins and led the Lee High boys' team to their first-ever appearance in the Alabama State Tennis Tournament in 2018.
Beyond tennis, Wilson contributed to football programs at both Lee High School and Alabama A&M University. At Alabama A&M, he served multiple terms as the kicking coach, mentoring several All-SWAC kickers and a punter, significantly enhancing the team's special teams performance.
Wilson's coaching philosophy emphasizes teaching life skills through sports. His approach has not only developed athletes but also empowered students to pursue higher education and lifelong engagement with sports. His unwavering commitment to youth development and sportsmanship has left an indelible mark on the Huntsville community.
