Glynn Stowe

Class of 1997

Few coaches have had a greater impact on wrestling in Huntsville than Wiley Glynn Stowe. Through decades of dedication to coaching and teaching, Stowe helped build some of the most successful wrestling programs in North Alabama.

Born in 1942 in Randolph County, Alabama, Stowe developed his love for athletics early in life. At Central High School in Phenix City he competed in football, wrestling, and track before graduating in 1960. His athletic ability earned him the opportunity to continue competing at the collegiate level.

Stowe first attended the University of Georgia before transferring to the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga. There he continued playing football and also became a standout member of the wrestling team, gaining valuable experience that would later shape his coaching career.

His coaching journey began in 1965 at Fort Payne High School, where he served as an assistant football coach and wrestling coach. One year later he joined the staff of legendary football coach John Meadows at Butler High School in Huntsville. Stowe remained at Butler for more than a decade as both an assistant football coach and head wrestling coach.

During his time with the Rebels, Stowe built one of Alabama’s premier wrestling programs. His Butler teams captured four Class 6A state championships in 1970, 1973, 1975, and 1977. Under his leadership, the Rebels established a reputation for discipline, conditioning, and technical excellence on the mat.

In 1978 Stowe moved across town to Grissom High School, where he continued to influence student-athletes and eventually moved into school administration. Even after leaving Butler, his coaching career continued to shape the sport in North Alabama.

From 1991 through 1994, Stowe served as an assistant wrestling coach at Athens High School. During that time the Golden Eagles won three Class 5A state championships in 1991, 1993, and 1994 and finished as state runner-up in 1992.

Stowe later earned a master’s degree from Alabama A&M University and remained a respected figure in Alabama wrestling.
