Thomas T. Boyd grew up in Madison County and developed into one of the area’s most accomplished football players before going on to a standout career at the University of Alabama and in professional football.
At Huntsville’s Lee High School, Boyd was a three-sport athlete who excelled in football, track, and soccer. His greatest impact came on the football field, where he emerged as a dominant defensive player. As a senior, Boyd served as team captain and earned both All-State and Prep All-American honors, establishing himself as one of the top linebackers in the region.
Boyd continued his football career at the University of Alabama, becoming a key contributor during one of the most successful eras in Crimson Tide history. A four-year letterman from 1978 to 1981, Boyd started the final three seasons of his collegiate career. During that remarkable stretch, Alabama compiled a 42-5-1 record and captured back-to-back national championships in 1978 and 1979 under legendary coach Paul “Bear” Bryant.
Known for his toughness, mobility, and instinctive play, Boyd became one of the most productive tacklers in Alabama history. His 120 tackles during the 1980 season ranked among the best single-season totals in school history at the time, second only to Woodrow Lowe’s 134 tackles in 1973.
