Greg Patterson

Class of 2002

Greg Patterson built a remarkable legacy in Huntsville athletics both as a standout player and as one of the most successful high school football coaches in the city’s history.

A Huntsville native, Patterson first gained recognition as a talented quarterback at Lee High School. During the 1966 and 1967 seasons he earned All-City and All-Conference honors while establishing himself as one of the area’s most accomplished passers. His impressive performances led to his selection as quarterback of the North team in the North-South All-Star Game in Tuscaloosa, a prestigious showcase of Alabama’s top high school players.

After graduating from Lee, Patterson accepted a football scholarship to Jacksonville State University. He later completed his degree at the University of North Alabama in 1972 and began a long and successful career as a coach and educator.

Patterson coached at several North Alabama schools, including Cullman High School, Johnson High School and Huntsville High School. His greatest impact came during his 18 seasons at Huntsville High, where he became the winningest football coach in the school’s history with 104 victories.

His coaching success extended beyond football. Patterson also led Huntsville teams in baseball, softball and golf, compiling winning records in each sport. Over the course of his career he recorded 104 football victories, 195 softball victories and 101 baseball victories.

Patterson’s achievements brought numerous honors, including City Coach of the Year awards four times in football, twice in golf and twice in softball. He also served as president of the Alabama High School Athletic Directors and Coaches Association in 1998 and 1999. He continues to serve the community in many roles, including as Historian of this Hall of Fame.

In 2000 Patterson coached the North squad to victory in the Alabama high school all-star football game, further highlighting his reputation as one of the state’s most respected coaches.

Greg Patterson credits much of his success to the support of his family and the dedication of the coaching staffs with whom he worked throughout his career.
