Frank “Kenny” Daniel
Class of 2002
Frank “Kenny” Daniel’s life in athletics reflects the strong tradition of community sports that shaped generations of Huntsville youth. A Madison County native, Daniel grew up during a time when neighborhood ball fields, school teams, and local leagues formed the heart of community life.
Daniel attended Butler High School, where he became a standout multi-sport athlete. He lettered in both football and baseball during his sophomore, junior, and senior seasons. On the football field he developed into a respected leader, and during his senior year his teammates selected him as the team captain, a recognition that reflected both his talent and his character.
Following graduation, Daniel continued his athletic career at Florence State College, now the University of North Alabama. Playing along the line for the Lions, he earned four varsity letters and capped his collegiate career with All–Alabama Collegiate Conference honors as a senior. In addition to his football accomplishments, Daniel also lettered two seasons in baseball while attending Florence State.
Baseball had long been an important part of Daniel’s athletic life. As a youngster he played on the Pony League All-Star team that captured the Alabama state championship in 1955. Even after his college years, he remained active in the sport, playing semipro baseball in Huntsville by 1961.
Daniel’s greatest impact on the local athletic community came after his playing career ended. Working with the YMCA, he helped introduce T-Ball to Huntsville area youth, opening the door for countless young players to experience organized baseball for the first time. He later continued shaping young athletes as a respected teacher and coach at Lee High School.
Daniel once explained that the people he admired most were the cotton mill workers of Huntsville who finished long days of labor and still found the energy to play ball with their children. Their dedication and love of community left a lasting impression on him and guided his own approach to sports and life.
